Barge stuck in ice on the Illinois River

This barge is stuck in ice on the Illinois River. It’s attempting to carry bulk rock salt to Chicago area communities for spreading on area roads. Tom Brier, general manager of Ice Melt Chicago, who’s sent us this shot, tells us that because of the river ice, salt distributors have been forced to offload their salt in St. Louis and truck it into the Chicago area. The city reported just the other day that Chicago has shipped 9000 tons of salt a week and that it arrives in 35 trucks operated by private companies.
