STORM SUMMARY 2-23&24-12

An area of rain spread into the north central and northeast Illinois from south to north late morning and early afternoon on 2-23. Large snowflakes began mixing with the rain from around Elgin/Barrington to Hoffman Estates to Wheeling between 2-3pm. Precipitation alternated between rain and snow for this area until late afternoon when it turned over to all wet snow. Initially, only grassy areas received accumulating snow. The transition from rain To snow took a much longer time for areas to the south. As a consequence, the Snowfall totals especially south of about Rte 64 were much lower than to the North. Rain didn’t change over to snow around Joliet, Morris, Kankakee until after 2-3 am on the 2-24. There were some reports of thunder snow over The far northwest burbs between 7-9pm on 2-23. Snow amounts mainly north of 90 were in the 2-4 inch range as of midnight with 1-2 inches south. As of midnight, ORD only had a trace. A band of moderate to heavy snow moved through the area From west to east between 2-7am which resulted in snowfall rates around an inch to 1.5 inches per hour for 2-3 hours. Plowing and salting was required. Some of the far south burbs only needed salting. Officially the storm total was 3.5 inches and Rockford had 5 inches.
