STORM SUMMARY 1-12&13-13

The air temperature started out in the 50s on the morning of the 12th and surface
temperatures were in the mid 40s. A cold front moved through the area by late morning which sent temperatures tumbling down into the 30s early afternoon. An area of light rain mixed with some sleet spread into northern Illinois between 7-8pm. Air temperatures at the onset were between 33-35 degrees while surface pavement temps were still in the 36-38 degree range. As the air temperature continued fall into the 27-30 range after 10pm, the ground temps continued to lower which led to slick and icy surfaces. By the time the main area of freezing rain exited the area around 2-3am on the 13th most surface temps were in the upper 20s to 31. Any untreated surface turned into a skating rink. The ice accumulation was more substantial on elevated surfaces. There were some areas that received some snow and sleet accumulation from Rockford to Lake County . Some flurries occurred from time to time during the day and evening on the 13 but after 2-3am, there was no additional measurable precipitation. Temperatures continued to fall throughout the day Sunday. The 12am temp was 30 , 6am 28 noon 25 6pm 20 12am 14. All surfaces needed salting. Precipitation amounts .10-.30 fell with trace to less than an inch snow totals. Again this was more of an icing situation.
