STORM SUMMARY 1-16-17

A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY RAN FROM 5AM TO-
NOON FOR THE ARE. Light freezing rain mixed with some sleet initially spread
into the area from southwest to northeast between 3-5am. Air temperatures were
31-32 degrees at the onset while the sub surface temps ran around 31 degrees.
Even though the air temperature nudged above freezing 6-7 am, icing still occurred
due the colder sub surface temps till 10am. Icing occurred from the ground up
in many instances and not on contact. Readings reached 35-37 degrees by
noon and this turned the rain to just a straight rain through the afternoon until the
rain turned to drizzle. Some locations needed multiple applications of salt to
keep the water from icing up on the pavement between 3-10am.
