STORM SUMMARY 1-27-13

A freezing rain advisory was issued for the entire area from 9am to 9pm. Snow, sleet and freezing rain began between 11am and 1pm. Air and surface temps were both below freezing which resulted in slick surfaces. Pre- salting was encouraged for street departments as well as for commercial services that had clients open for
business on Sunday. Precipitation began as light snow and sleet for much of the area. By 2-3 pm, precipitation was mainly in the form of freezing rain which was occasionally mixed with sleet. The combination of snow and sleet left some surfaces slushy while others were glazed over the by the freezing rain. The glazing continued for much of the area until 9-10pm. After 10pm, most surfaces finally rose above 32 and the freezing rain turned to light rain and drizzle which carried over in the early morning hours of 1-28. The combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain left most surfaces area-wide with an accumulation of 1/10 to 2/10. This was a fairly long duration event so even with pre-salting, multiple applications of salt was needed. Since this was an icing event, I won’t put any amounts down for specific locations. All areas experienced the icing and glazing with for the most part equal
amounts. Temperatures rose to 36-37 around midnight.
