STORM SUMMARY 1-3-2015

A winter weather advisory till noon. Light snow and in some areas a combination of light snow and sleet developed between 2-4am. Air temperatures were 30-31
Degrees at the onset and pavement temperatures were in the 27-28 range at the
Onset. The snow and sleet combination switched over to light rain and drizzle most areas south of I90 by 6am while remaining snow and sleet north of I90 into mid am. Air and surface pavement temperatures south of I90 rose to 33-34 degrees by mid morning and remained there for the remainder of the day through midnight. Readings Rockford to Lake County remained close to 32 until late morning with readings hanging around 33 for the remainder of the day. The snow and sleet combination produced less than an inch accumulation. The subsurface temperatures hung around 32 all day and night which prevented the snow and
Sleet accumulation from melting even with a pretty good amount of rainfall that fell between 6am and late afternoon. Many folks decided to try to scrape off the slushy mess during the afternoon and evening since just plain salt was not melting all of it due to the colder subsurface temps. Some drizzle and light rain occurred at timed after 6-7pm through midnight. Some areas continued to fight refreezing and need to keep applying fresh salt to try to keep surfaces wet.
