STORM SUMMARY 1-31-21&2-2-2015

Rain and snow spread into northern Illinois between 6-8pm on 1-31and transitioned over to all snow between 10-11pm. We prepared everyone for a very long duration event which is exactly what happened. For parts of the Chicago area, this ended Up being a 36 hour event and about 30 hours for Rockford. Many areas received more snow from this single long event that what had fallen prior to date. This was the 5th largest snow event ever for Chicago and the 10th overall largest snow for Rockford. The snow began very wet and it gradually transitioned into a drier and less dense snow by late afternoon Sunday and Sunday night. The liquid equivalent at ORD was only .87 which normally would suggest 8-9 inches of snow but the ratios increased to almost 30 to 1 instead of the usual 10-1 by late afternoon Sunday – 2-1. Lake effect snow lingered until almost midmorning
In Chicago on 2-2. Amounts after midnight on 2-2 were under a couple of inches.
As the snow became drier, the pressure gradient tightened up resulting in winds gusting to 40 mph. This resulted in considerable blowing and drifting snow
Causing whiteout conditions. Some cities pulled their plows off the roads
Because of the zero visibilities. Winter storm warnings were replaced by a blizzard warning 10:30am on 2-1 and lasted till midnight. The winds caused
Drifts 3-6 feet. Officially ORD had 19.3 inches, MDW 19.2 Romeoville 15.3.
