STORM SUMMARY 1-4&5-2014
Another long duration snow event for the area. Snow began in the Rockford after 9-10am before spreading into the Chicago area noon to 2pm. Much like the New Year’s eve system, it took long for the snow to begin south of a line from ORD to Sugar Grove. Snowfall continued until late afternoon/evening on the 5th. Winter weather advisory included Rockford to McHenry County from 10am on the 4th to noon on the 5th.

Meanwhile a winter storm warning was issued late morning on the 4th that
Included the rest of the area until 6pm on the 5th. A wind chill warning began on the 5th at 6pm and was to run until noon on the 7th. The two day official totals at ORD were 11.7 inches, 9.6 at MDW, 2.8 Rockford and 11.2 at Romeoville.

Temperatures for a part of the event were warm enough for city crews to use salt as temps were in the 29-31 range from late morning on the 4th to 2am on the 5th. Temperatures slowly fell throughout the day on the 5th. They got down into the single digits by late afternoon/evening and were subzero by midnight. While street crews used salting and plowing as a means to keep surfaces clean, commercial
Services tried to avoid using salt as they wanted to keep surfaces as dry as possible because of the forecast plunging temperatures on the 5th. They did not want surfaces to turn into skating rinks once temps dropped with the prospects of salt not being effective.
