STORM SUMMARY 12-16 TO 12-18-16

The weekend featured another long duration event with an assortment of weather. Snow developed 2-4pm across the area on 12-16. The initial band of snowfall ended from south to north 9-10pm. Some patchy freezing drizzle occurred at times after 10-11pm. This combined with some light occurred at times till mid afternoon on 12-17. Snowfall amounts ranged between .5 to 2” on the average with the highest totals north of I90. Most areas south of I88 were under an inch for the first period. Salting and in some areas plowing was required. Additional applications of salt was required at times on 12-17 due to patchy freezing drizzle and isolated sleet. Meanwhile, light freezing rain occurred south of I80 including the Kankakee area. The expected 2nd wave of snow began by late afternoon most areas and didn’t complete depart the area until just prior to dawn and 12-18. The batch of snow produced 1-3 inches on the average with more salting and plowing required. Gusty northwest winds produced blowing and drifting snow in open areas through at least midday Sunday the 18th. ORD had 1.2 on 12-16 and 1.7 on 12-17 % .5 12-18. RFD 1.4 on 12-16 and 2,0 12-17 & .3 12-18 Romeoville .3 on 12-16 and 1.2 12-17 & 1.8 12-18.
