STORM SUMMARY 2-21&22-13.

A big powerful storm tracked from Texas to northwest Illinois from the morning of the 21st to the afternoon/evening of the 22nd. This system produced 12-18 inches of snow over Kansas but as forecast it was a weakening system and one that was running into drier air so the snow totals were much less impressive for the local area. Our afternoon forecast on 2-21 called for 3-6 inches and after evaluation the new data I updated the forecast at 10pm for 2-4 inches. This was system did produce enough snowfall for plowing and salting and there was even some freezing drizzle at times during the day 22nd for the need for multiple applications of salt. Average snow totals were between 2-4 inches. The snow began between 9-11pm on the 21st. The precipitation actually began as sleet for a short bit south of I88. The main Accumulating snow band lifted north of the Illinois/Wisconsin border between 2-3:30am. The snow intensities did show quite a bit of variability on radar which is the reason for the non uniform amounts across the area. There was also a good deal of wind which resulted in blowing snow and near whiteout conditions prior to daybreak on the 22nd. Some very light snow, flurries and freezing drizzle occurred off and on thru the evening with some flurries then continuing into the 23rd. Temperatures were in the 24-28 range from the start of the snowfall through 10am. Readings did rise above freezing for a short bit 2-4pm.
